SUMMARY:Utilizing Nature-Based Solutions for the Advancement of Multiple Ob
jectives\, Co-Benefits\, and Health | CPO NbS Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Adapting to climate change requires cities to leverage their ef
forts to meet multiple objectives and do so through an equity lens that co
unteracts existing patterns of vulnerability. This webinar episode by NOAA
OAR’s Climate Program Office (USA).will feature three projects that con
sider co-benefits of NbS.\n\nThe first project\, led by CAP’s Mid Atlant
ic team\, addresses questions related to equitable multi-objective adaptat
ion planning across scales. During the webinar you’ll learn about MARISA
’s equity-oriented\, multi-objective planning tool to support participat
ory adaptation scenario analysis through their case study in Baltimore.\n\
nThe second project\, led by CAP’s Southwest team\, Climate Assessment f
or the Southwest (CLIMAS)\, seeks to identify places to integrate health a
cross the spectrum of climate resilience approaches. Their presentation wi
ll provide an overview of their plan to conduct a systematic review of int
erventions to support city planners\, fire responders\, and emergency mana
gers\, as well as the role NbS has in protecting human and animal health.\
n\nThe final presentation will be a small grant-funded project by CAP’s
Great Lakes team\, Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments (GLISA)
. Chicago’s Southeast Side faces some of the City’s worst economic and
health conditions. Massive storms have caused extreme flooding in the Sou
theast Side and combined sewer overflows in the nearby Calumet River. GLIS
A and the Alliance for the Great Lakes teamed up to support the work of th
e Calumet Connect partners on the Southeast Side of Chicago. Calumet Conne
ct partners are working with the Chicago Department of Planning and Develo
pment (CDPD) and the Chicago Public Health Department (CPHD) on two policy
initiatives: the Calumet River industrial corridor modernization plan and
a city-wide stormwater management strategy and maintenance program.\n\nRe
gister here\n\nMore information: Event webpage\n\n\n\nThis webinar is part
of Climate and Societal Interactions Division Nature-Based Solutions Web
inar Series\, organized by the NOAA OAR’s Climate Program Office (USA)
.\n\nThis five-part webinar series features projects funded by the Climate
and Societal Interactions (CSI) Division’s Adaptation Sciences (AdSci
) and Climate Adaptation Partnerships (CAP) programs focused on the rese
arch and application of nature-based solutions (NbS)\, which are actions t
o protect\, sustainably manage\, or restore natural or modified ecosystems
to address societal challenges\, simultaneously providing benefits for pe
ople and the environment.\n\nCSI invests in research networks that connect
and align cutting-edge science with the most urgent needs of stakeholders
. As projects are rooted in community needs\, NbS work funded through AdSc
i and CAP varies and includes topics ranging from identifying trade-offs a
nd co-benefits of NbS\, to informing decision support and community planni
ng\, as well as evaluation of projects once implemented.
