SUMMARY:EGU
DESCRIPTION:Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are “actions to protect\, conser
ve\, restore\, sustainably use and manage natural or modified ecosystems\,
that address socio-economic and environmental challenges\, while simultan
eously providing human well-being\, resilience and biodiversity benefits
”. Within the framework of a global ecosystem approach\, NbS must encomp
ass ecological\, societal\, political\, economic and cultural issues at al
l levels\, from the individual to the collective\, from local to national\
, from the public or private sphere. As underlined by the IPCC and IPBES\,
climate change and biodiversity loss are deeply interconnected and must be
addressed jointly. This session therefore focuses on how NbS can serve as
adaptation strategies to climate change\, while simultaneously preserving
or restoring biodiversity. Considering various ecosystems (marine and coa
 stal\, urban\, cropland\, mountainous\, forest\, rivers…)\, NbS as clima
te change adaptation solutions includes the adaptation to: sea level rise
(flooding and erosion)\, changes of the water regime (floods\, droughts\,
water quality and availability)\, rise in temperatures (heat waves\, fores
t fires\, drought\, energy consumption)\, plant stress and increase of pes
ts (variation of yields\, forest dieback)\, to minimize their associated s
ocial and economic negative impacts.Therefore\, this session aims to promo
te discussion integrating multiple disciplines related to ecosystem restor
ation\, preservation and management\, to put forward the complexity that i
s often hidden by simplifying hypotheses and approaches (sector-based silo
approach\, homogeneity of environments...).\nSpecific topics of interest
are the followings:\n\n Complexity: nature of ecosystems and risk of over
simplification\, interconnection between NbS and complementary areas\, con
sideration of uncertainties\n Scales: spatial scales with the integration
of NbS in their environment\, and temporal scales considering sustainabil
ity over time\, variability of bio-physical processes and climate change e
ffects\n Ecosystem services: bio-geophysical processes\, spatial shift be
tween the location of NbS and the beneficiaries one\, modification under c
limate change (tipping point)\, co-benefits or negative effects\n Assessm
ent and indicators: measurement and modelling protocols\, capacity to meas
ure the complexity\, resilience and stability of NbS\n Co-development wit
h stakeholders\, engaging civil society\, and integrating NBS into educati
on\, aligned with IAHS Helping Decade objectives\n\n\n\n\n\nThis session i
s part of the EGU General Assembly 2026\, which will feature a dedicated f
ocus on Nature-based Solutions. The session is convened\, among others\, b
y Daniela Rizzi\, Coordinator of NetworkNature\, highlighting the relevanc
e of NbS within the broader European research and policy landscape.\n\nFur
ther information about the EGU 2026 programme is available at:\nhttps://ww
w.egu26.eu/.\n\nResearchers and practitioners are invited to contribute to
the session by submitting an abstract through the official submission pla
 tform:\nSubmit Abstract.\n\n\nImportant deadline:\nThe deadline for online
  abstract submission is 15 January 2026 (13:00 CET).\n\n\n
