Urbanpromo 2025: Regenerating Cities through Innovation and Sustainability

The 22nd edition of Urbanpromo – Projects for the Country will take place in Florence from November 11 to 14, 2025. Promoted by the National Institute of Urban Planning (INU) and organized by the instrumental company URBIT – Urbanistica Italiana Srl, the event is based on the work of a Steering Committee that collects and coordinates proposals from the various Working Groups.

The main partners of INU and URBIT for this year’s edition include Fondazione CR Firenze, Fondazione Cariplo, Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT, Fondazione con il Sud, CDP Real Asset Sgr, Regione Toscana, Città Metropolitana di Firenze, Comune di Firenze, ANCE, Confcommercio, and FS Sistemi Urbani.

The event takes place at the Innovation Center of Fondazione CR Firenze, a historic building originally constructed at the end of the 17th century by Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici as the Granaio dell’Abbondanza, later transformed into a modern center for technological innovation. Located on Lungarno Soderini and just a short walk from Santa Maria Novella station, the Innovation Center hosts conferences in four rooms at the basement level, while the ground floor features the 21 silos of the historic granary, exhibition spaces, foyers, and hospitality services.

The cultural program of Urbanpromo revolves around four main themes: urban regeneration (Urbanpromo Città), social housing (Urbanpromo Social Housing), ecological transition (Urbanpromo Green), and digital culture (Urbanpromo Digital). The guiding theme of this year’s event, “Regenerate to Live and Live to Regenerate”, is explored through topics such as living in tourist cities, managing short-term rentals, social housing, and student housing. Other areas of focus include the regeneration of confiscated properties, the enhancement of public housing districts (ERP), environmental restoration, and cultural regeneration.

Discussions also address the impact of technology hubs on urban contexts, inclusive strategies for “urban ghettos for seasonal workers,” and the situation of depopulating internal areas. Attention is given to environmental compensations and Nature-Based Solutions. The event is also an opportunity to reflect on the need for a new national urban planning law and on regulatory challenges in urban regeneration, construction, and sustainable development. Special focus is given to innovation, with panels on artificial intelligence applied to urban planning, digital platforms for urban services—from mobility to digital food—and the role of excellence hubs as catalysts for territorial and social development.

Over the four days of Urbanpromo, the conference rooms host four parallel conferences, generally structured in two sessions of approximately 90–100 minutes each, with a break. Some conferences adopt different formats and are also streamed online. All events are recorded and made available afterward. As usual, INU and URBIT request professional accreditation for participants from the relevant professional Orders.

As a preparatory path for Urbanpromo 2025, the “Urbanpromo Letture” format has been resumed with the series titled “Urban Action. Utility, Potential, Criticalities, Roots”, consisting of four monthly online meetings—two held in June and July, and two more between September and October.
